So it looks like a wheel speed sensor and not tires after all. There's probably youtube videos of how to troubleshoot those if you're looking for the DIY route.

Had no clue, I guess another reason why Modern BMWs don't make all that much sense to me.

Curious to the engineering logic behind the minimal stagger.
it's called planned obsolescence.

they produce a set of Star tires and the produce a set of wheels that make the rolling diameter acceptable for the transfer case for 3 years or 60,000 miles.

then the warranty runs out, the owner gets their own wheels and tires, and it kills off the transfer case, and BMW profits.

first thing i did was go square.

I'd look into the codes more, if it is indeed a wheel speed sensor then obviously things won't go well. And it could save you the cost of new tires if you end up deciding it's a sensor after all.

As for the timing, there were 4 wheels removed and replaced and so the work involved could have damaged a sensor. It's possible.

Got it, didn't realize you'd swapped back to the old tires. Nevermind.

I'm surprised, but it does seem like that's the case. Good work getting it figured out.

glad you got it sorted. at the end of the day it comes down to actual circumference of the matching set of tyres. if within spec (apparently 1%), transfer case happy. if not, transfer case not happy.
