I mean from the business perspective 100% they’ll leverage the M cache and reputation. And I do underhand that if I was on the inside.

It’s crazy how much they throw the M logo around now. The new M Lite cars have them absolutely everywhere and I think it’s kinda hilarious. I guess it really just sells, But it’s just not the same level of performance and it kind of dilutes the concept of M from a traditional standpoint.
Not really a new thing, this M535i is over 40 years old…

You could probably argue that even the “full M” cars are guilty of the same thing — they’re still road cars with only some of the bits, engineering, and marketing from the actual race cars. Just to a higher degree than the “m lites”. All of this compromise is a good thing btw. Trying to daily an M4 GT3 would probably be awful.

The Lucid motors are the key to their success. Their motors are highly efficient and compact. They were ex-Tesla engineers who got tired of Tesla holding back innovation.

It would be amazing if BMW would just buy their motors.
Have you driven one? I would say they have a lot more going for them than just their motor or battery tech. Lucid's chassis setup people got the Air very, very right. It rides and handles extremely well and the steering also feels great. I wasn't expecting to like the Air because it's so huge and I drove a very low trim example but it's actually excellent. I drove that and an i5 on the same day and actually found the BMW to be a joke in comparison.

It's baffling to hear some people hate on this design with comments like "BMW sucks now" or "RIP BMW." Based on what we're seeing, this design embodies classic BMW. Look at the elements: the long hood (even as a ground-up EV), short overhangs, flared fenders, shark nose, Hofmeister kink, dual lights—it's all there. Even the beltline aligns perfectly with the window sill height of the E30, and the overall shape unmistakably echoes the E30 era - More than any M3 since E30.

This car integrates the hallmarks of BMW's design legacy—features that so-called "enthusiasts" have been lamenting the absence of in other models. And now that these design cues are back, they still complain. It proves one thing: haters will always hate. Bring an exact copy of E46 or E30, they will definitely complain - maybe because it doesn't have the 16" wheels, or because it doesn't leak oil every few months, or maybe because it doesn't have the old school dashboard. BMW has died once they bought their car, and that's it! It’s not about the design—it’s about their arrogance, their self centrism, and their inability to move forward.

COUPE! THIS ! We have the Spectre and the Charger diametricly opposed at ends of the spectrum, but a M2, M4, S5 esque offer would be fantastic. Just sandbag it and I incorporate a manual too ( my fantasy )

You can’t understand how lucky I was to be 50 years old, because I got to dream, drool over the hood, long for, try, drive, and own wonderful BMWs. If I were 20 now, I would have missed out on the genuine fun and would find myself configuring this hideous crap.

No I haven't had the opportunity to drive one yet and now I would be worried about trying one and looking it too much. 😂

Yes, I know half of you are gonna start quoting me and want to tell me all the reasons why EV is the future and who am I to tell people what an M car should be.

No, I don’t care, we can have different opinions. I really just don’t think they should consider these M cars. They’re a new class of BMW.

An other 2000kg plus car?

The driving experience of light cars are simple the best experience! I would rather spend my money on a an old M3 CSL or 1M coupe then on any new BMW atm.

This EV will go well over 2000kg an other nice car for daily transport. No fun or weekend car for sure!

Nobody? LOL. Ok.
NickyC is right, Nobody will mourn the G80 design. Will you look at future M cars and think, “I really wish it had that big, oddly shaped grille?” Is there anyone in this forum who’s going to miss that? Honest question to all.

Except, he's not. He doesn't speak for everyone and neither do you. Will I look back one day? IDK - I can't predict the future but it is my favorite M3 and the fact that it's the last pure ICE M3 makes it special to me. May just be my forever car. What I can tell you for certain is that I loved all my previous M3's but mourn none of them.

Y'all have got to stop speaking in absolutes.

We’re speaking only about design. I accept the G80 has performance and other elements that are better than previous M3’s. The question is do you and other G80 owners want that grille. I have no hesitation in saying that I would love to see design elements from the front end of the E30 to the F80 to be included in future M3’s. Can you say the same thing about the G80? I would like to see you and other G80 fans say it. “I want a similar large grille on the new M3” Do you?

Would you believe me if I told you that I love that grille? I love how aggressive the car looks. That front end is menacing. I don't need my cars to be classically "pretty." So, as a G80 owner, I'd love to see some iteration of that grille in future models. But, I'm also ok with it not being there. The F80 still looks fucking fantastic and I have zero issues with going back to smaller grilles.

Pfft ...M cars have always been about EVs because"M" stands for Motorsport. EVs have motors and everything else has an engine. M doesn't stand for "Enginesport".

Hehe.
